Original Oil painting/portrait of a young woman - 1950s
20” x 28”
Original portrait of unknown woman. Lovely soft hues and sense of light. Young woman is wearing a strapless pale blue, satin evening gown. Elbows resting on a round table. Has the feel of a debutante portrait of the time.
Canvas stretched on wood frame. Signature is on underside.
I believe it to be signed Wesselow although this name may have been added later.
The final photo is of a work by Wesselow showing a very similar palette.
The artist and designer: Eric Wesselow (1911-1988) was an internationally known artist who became known as an innovator in stained glass and plastics. Of Russian/Polish heritage, he studied in Germany and Italy and was awarded the prestigious Prix de Rome. His stained glass work can be seen in Christ Church Cathedral, Temple Beth Shalom and Pierre Elliot Trudeau Airport in Montreal.
Wesselow painted many famous people: Albert Schweitezer, Pope Pius Xll, Paderweski, Thomas Mann, Marshall McLuhan and Maureen Forrester.
The signature may say 'Wesserlow' but there is no research available for that as a surname let alone an artist.
